What's an Escape Room?

A quick run-down of what we're doing here

At the Enigma Room, we host real life escape games which are fun and engaging live action activities which take place in our specially designed escape rooms. Suited for small groups of 2-6 people, you and your team will be given a back story that includes an objective, and you will only have 60 minutes to complete your mission and escape the room. To do all that, you will need to work as a team to solve a series of puzzles that will test your logic, lateral thinking and ingenuity.

We have a variety of puzzles planted in our rooms. These include puzzles that require your powers of observation, some that involve scientific phenomena, some that need a bit of logic and deduction, and some that require a little physical skill.

Escape games are an all inclusive activity that require no special skills or tools, except the most powerful tool you already have - your brain!

Here is a simple example:

You and your team are corporate spies and you've managed to break in to a rival's business to try to steal their super secret formula, but you've been trapped in by the office security system! You know the police will arrive within the hour, but you've come all this way and you're not leaving without the formula, so you start your search. You see a desk, a computer, a bookshelf and a filing cabinet. You need the right password to unlock the computer, but what is it?

  • You all frantically search the room and a team mate finds a key taped underneath the chair.
  • The key unlocks the filing cabinet, and it's filled to the brim with files. Which file do you open?
  • On the desk there is a photo frame with a picture of a young family. They're standing in front of "John's Fish and Chips".
  • Another look in the filing cabinet reveals a file for "John's Fish and Chips".
  • Inside that is a post-it-note with the phrase, "Chish and Fips".
  • You try typing that in to the computer... success! The formula is yours!
  • But now you've done that, how do you escape? That's a whole new challenge in itself and the clock is counting down...

About Us

Who are the brains behind this operation?

The Enigma Room is one of Sydney's first independent escape room venues, founded by three mates, Matt Lee, Barry Skalrud and Piyush Bedi.

All three are fans of escape games and have played at loads of venues all around the world. Having all grown up in Sydney, we were surprised to find that the escape room concept hadn't already taken off in Australia so we decided to start our own. Rather than just copy what we've seen, we wanted to take the genre in a new direction and add our own personal touches to give first timers as well as seasoned players a truly unique experience.

Our Games

The Enigma Room is launching with two themed rooms.

Doctor Disaster, the dastardly dictator of the small but rich island nation of Genoda has built a missile facility away from prying eyes on the dark side of the moon, and is now holding the world to ransom! While world governments scramble in response, you and your team have stumbled across a message smuggled out by an insider giving you access to the launch facility, right here in Sydney! But time’s running out - you only have an hour left to find your way to the control panel and save the world!

Oh, and after that you may want to think about getting out alive.

Recommended if you like James Bond, Austin Powers, or Evil Genius.

A woman in a coma.

No name, no identity. Condition deteriorating, time running out.

To save her, you and your team must travel deep into her consciousness and relive her memories. Experience the joys of her past, and you may just save her future. But be quick, otherwise you might find yourself as nothing but another memory...

Frequently Asked Questions

We've heard them all before, so here are some answers

We are one of Sydney's first independently run escape game venues. Read more here.

An escape game is a fun and engaging activity for small teams of 2-6 people. You'll only have 60 minutes to "escape", and to do that you'll need to work as a team to solve a series of puzzles that will test your logic, lateral thinking and ingenuity.

Take a look at our description of an escape game here.

The rooms are primarily designed so you can think your way out; however, you will be required to move around the room and possibly move items into place. Don't worry, it's nothing too strenuous (although sometimes things get quite tense in there!).

Don't worry! Our puzzles have been designed to be difficult enough to provide a challenge while at the same time ensuring that everyone involved has a great time. We've designed a wide variety of different puzzles that need all different types of skills to tackle. Remember, you are not the only person in there, teamwork is required to claim victory and everyone has something to contribute, so ask your friends!

If after all your efforts you're still stuck, don't despair, your puzzle master will be able to provide you with a hint or two... or however many you need.

No, definitely not! While the phrase, "Escape Room" may imply that you have to solve the puzzles to get out, our games focus on completing several objectives with the ultimate goal of completing the story.

You and your teammates are free to leave the room at any time you wish, although we recommend that you stay inside the room until you complete it to enhance your experience. If you're still in the room after the timer has expired, we'll also help you out of there.

We recommend that groups arrive no later than 15 minutes before their allocated time slot. Before each game you'll have a short briefing session covering some basic rules and an introduction to the story. The game itself lasts 60 minutes, and we also encourage you to hang around after your game to discuss how it went and take some (hopefully post-victory) photos.

You don't need to bring anything except for yourselves and your wits. We will have lockers for you to store any valuables and bags while you play your game.

The minimum unsupervised age is 15. However, players under 15 are welcome provided they are supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

The pricing scheme at The Enigma Room depends on the number of people you bring to play. The more people you bring, the less you pay per person. So bring your friends!

Check out our pricing structure here.

We're always trying to make sure you and your group have the best experience possible by coming up with fresh and creative ideas that are unique to us. Our goal isn't to prove intellectual supremacy or squeeze you of all your cash, rather we only aim to put a smile on your face and bring out the best in you and your team. We think that our completely original puzzle ideas and combined with our particular blend of story telling will make your time with us unforgettable.

But more importantly, we don't think The Enigma Room should be your only choice. We love escape games and hope that you do too! If you visit us and have a good time, why not check out some other game masters in Sydney? Come in and ask us which other venue's we're fans of and we’ll be glad to provide our honest opinions.

Yes. The combined total capacity of our two game rooms is twelve people - if you provide us with sufficient notice we can run simultaneous games. We can also split up larger groups to run consecutive games. Please contact us for more information and we'll send you all the details you need to have a great day.

Unfortunately, no. Our games are designed for a minimum of two people to complete. We are, however, working on a booking system that will allow you to join other willing participants in their games (and make new friends!).

No problem. You can contact us here.
